July 24, 2004 - Portland, Oregon -- Peter Cunningham drove the TeamRTR Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V to a steady fourth place in today's SPEED Touring Car Championship series race at Portland International Raceway.

Cunningham qualified 11th for the race on the 1.944-mile circuit in Delta Park, but raced more sensibly than many of his competitors in the 100 degree heat, saving a little more of himself and his tires for the end of the 30-lap event.

He was in fifth place by the 9th lap when he passed series points leader Bill Auberlen, and took over fourth spot on lap 19 when he got by Nic Jonsson - second in the season points.

"This past week was a very short one for the TeamRTR crew. Not only did they have to travel all the way up the Pacific Coast from San Francisco -- where we had two races last weekend -- but they had to give the #4 Nissan a good bit of TLC to prepare for Portland."

"We were gunning for another podium finish for the team and for NISMO," he said, "but we were just unable to move as far forward as we wanted."

Cunningham remains sixth in the Touring Car points after today's result, but tightened the gap considerably and is only six points out of fourth.

"It'll take a couple of days for the cars to get home to Milwaukee," he said. "Even though we have another race in two weeks, at least the crew will have the luxury of being able to do their normal between-races maintenance in our home shop, and sleep in their own beds."

The seventh of ten rounds in the Touring Car Championship season will be Sunday, August 8 on Canada's Mosport International Raceway.

Today's Portland event will air on SPEED TV, Sunday, August 1 at Noon (EST)
