3R-Racing's Phil McClure waves his second checkered flag of 2003.
Driver leads Colorado team to another first place finish, this time at Mosport International Raceway's Victoria Day Weekend.
Denver (May 18, 2003) - 3R-Racing and driver Phil McClure have proven to be unbeatable in 2003. Just two races into the season, McClure has finished in first place at both the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring (held in March), and last weekend's Victoria Day Weekend Speed GT race at Canada's premier race venue, Mosport International Raceway. McClure's solid performance continues 3R-Racing's podium streak, and gives the team a total of two first place and a second place finish for the 2003 season.
McClure owned the day again at Mosport, powering through the field in the No. 73 Aggregate Industries/3R-Racing Chevrolet Corvett Z06 after starting in ninth place. He spent the first nine laps of the race picking off one car after another and working his way into the lead, scoring a 1.272 second win during the 30 lap, 73.77 mile contest. McClure's average speed on the 10-turn, fast Mosport track was 103.23 mph, pushing him to a strong finish ahead of John Young of Woodside, CA.
"It was fun to drive the car and know it was giving me everything it had to pass the other drivers," said McClure. "A lot of the credit has to go to the 3R-Racing crew, who are once again proving themselves to be one of the best crews in racing."
3R-Racing's other drivers also competed well early in the race, but mechanical problems caused driver Mike Fitzgerald, driving the No. 22 1st Interstate Inn/3R-Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, to leave the race after maintaining a top three position for the first eight laps. He returned to the race and finished 21st. Wiens, driving the No. 33 1st Interstate Inn/3R-Racing's 2003 Porsche GT3 Cup Car (Porsche 996 model) finished the race in 11th place after leaving the starting grid in 16th, turning in another solid finish for the second year driver. 3R-Racing's Victor Contreras, racing in the No. 69 Porsche GT3 Cup Car, also battled and finished one second behind Wiens in 12th place, after starting the race in the 19th position.
"The day belonged to Phil, but the entire team performed well and 3R-Racing is quickly distinguishing itself as one of the top teams in the 2003 SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge GT series," said team owner and driver Tim Wiens. "Phil has been incredible in both races, and the team's other drivers and crew members have been excellent in support. It's still early, but 2003 is shaping-up to be a great year for 3R-Racing, and we couldn't be happier with our start."
