April 19, 2009 (Long Beach, Calif.) - Long Beach resident Craig Stanton wore a big smile on his face after wrapping up his second Speed World Challenge practice session on Saturday morning. Running a time quick enough for tenth on the timesheets, Stanton and the Aasco Motorsports team were more than pleased with their day's work.Stanton is competing not only in the Speed World Challenge race, but in the GT3 Cup Shootout -- a subclass comprised entirely of Porsche 997
GT3 Cup cars. The GT3 Cup cars, while similar in spec to the World Challenge Porsche GT3 cars, have a few differences -- including lacking about 80-100 horsepower in comparison to the World Challenge Porsche GT3 cars.
"When you are driving a car that is down on horsepower, it is important to maximize your corner-exit speed as much as possible," says Stanton. As part of his routine, the moment he comes off the track he immediately pulls out a map of the circuit to jot down notes of his Porsche's behavior in each of the eleven challenging Long Beach corners.
"The car is very, very good," continued Stanton. "This is a unique deal where this car is normally run on different tires, and hasn't been to Long Beach before, so we are making a lot of setup changes as we go. But the Aasco Motorsports guys have been nailing it, and we have made great progress and there is still more to come.
"I'm excited to show what we've got in qualifying tomorrow. Racing at Long Beach has been such a great experience so far, and we have tons of support from family, friends, and our sponsors that I am very grateful for."
Qualifying for Sunday's Speed World Challenge GT race will be held from 8-8:30am, before the race kicks off at 4:15pm.
