COPPELLI MAKES IT THREE STRAIGHT WITH LIME ROCK WORLD CHALLENGE S2 WIN
LAKEVILLE, Conn., -- Almo Coppelli, of Milan, Italy, won his third straight SCCA World Challenge Sports Division, S2 Class race, taking the win with a 6.639-second margin of victory at Lime Rock Park, Conn.
Driving the Callaway SuperNatural Corvette, Coppelli took the lead four laps from the end of the 45-lap, 68.85-mile race. Finishing second was Rob Rizzo, of North Providence, R.I., driving the #55 Saleen Mustang.
The early leader was Steve Saleen, of Irvine, Calif., who started first and held the lead until the lap six when he was overtaken by the Callaway Corvette of Coppelli. Coppelli then held the lead until lap 15, when Rizzo took over by passing him in turn four. Rizzo then began to stretch the lead as Coppelli began to have trouble with his left rear tire.
Fortunately for Coppelli, a full course yellow for the removal of debris not only closed the gap to Rizzo, but also allowed him to cool his overheated tire. When the race resumed after three laps, Coppelli was able to mount an attack on Rizzo, taking the lead with a daring outside move through the turn one.
"After about 15 laps I had a problems with the tires, and I slowed down the car to cool them," said Coppelli. "Then I was ready to go again. I worked really hard to catch Rizzo. He is a good driver and tried very hard to defend his position."
Rizzo finished second to Coppelli, with third place going to Steve Saleen. Jochen Rohr, of Cincinnati, Ohio, finished fourth in the Rohr Racing Porsche 911GT2, followed by Shane Lewis, of Jupiter, Fla., in a Mosler Intruder.
