Kleinubing Fastest in SPEED Touring Car Practice at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
MONTEREY, Calif. (Oct. 15, 2004) -- Pierre Kleinubing, of Coconut Creek, Fla., was the fastest in both SCCA SPEED Touring Car practice sessions Friday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, in preparation for Sunday's season finale. Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., was second fastest, while and Touring Car point leader Bill Auberlen, of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., was third.
Driving the No. 42 A-SPEC/RealTime Racing Acura TSX, three-time series Champion Kleinubing turned the fastest lap of the day in the morning session, with a 1:38.076. Kleinubing's only win at Mazda Raceway came in 1999.
Kleinubing's lap was almost five seconds faster than the existing qualifying lap record of 1:42.939 (78.267 mph) set by Altenburg in 2003.
Altenburg, who is the defending race winner from a year ago, turned his fastest lap in the morning session with a 1:38.264. Altenburg won last year's race in a Mazda Protege, but if he is to duplicate last year's effort, he will have to do it in his new Mazda 6.
Auberlen, who is looking to capture his second SPEED Touring Car Championship in as many years this weekend, turned the third fastest lap in his No. 1 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW 325i with a 1:38.786.
Bob Stretch, of Dallas, and Peter Cunningham, of West Bend, Wis., were fourth and fifth quickest, respectively.
SPEED Touring Car qualifying is set for 12:15 p.m. (Pacific) Saturday, Oct. 16. The SPEED Touring Car Round Ten race will make its standing start at 10:25 a.m. (Pacific) Sunday, Oct. 17. Sunday's race will air at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern) and 12:00 p.m. (Pacific), Sunday Oct. 17.
