Cupertino, CA. - The race started with a bang and ended with a bang. At the start the green flag dropped and David looked as though he were standing still while the others were shot out of a cannon as he fell back from his 17th place starting position. David stated, "I was already done on power and then I got caught up on the rev-limiter in 2nd gear. They went by so fast that I think I almost dropped to last (23rd).
Soon David was up to speed, passed and moved back up to his original position. He did not stop there though and continued a slow climb up through the field. At the halfway point things seemed to be going as planned in hopes of a Top 10 finish. David was in 15th place and gaining.
That was when the trouble happened, on lap 12 he went wide in turn 4 and dropped a tire out in the dirt. It ended with a cloud of dust and tires flying as David came to rest safely in the tire wall. David said, "It seemed to be no big deal going wide in 4 as I have done it before. But when I returned to the track the car angled sideways and then I knew I was in trouble. The car slung-shot across the track and I was just along for the ride. That was not how we planned to finish the race. I have not crashed since 1995 and I want to apologize to my team for my mistake."
As the race progressed and ended the 2 competitors David was between finished 7th and 8th. So it looks like a Top 10 was possible if not for the team also becoming part of the attrition, finishing 22nd. "I would like to thank my team and friend (car owner) Tony Lopez. Also ASP and Bob's Custom Auto for all the pre-race help."
"I would also like to thank SCCA Pro Racing team, most notably Mitch Wright and Robin Mackay for making my 1st experience fun. I hope I put on a decent show, as the Touring series is a great race group with popular selling streetcars. Also congratulations to Mike Galati for winning the Championship."
David drove the #33 Acura Integra GS-R. The race will be aired on Speedvision Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. PST (9 p.m. EST).
