Tire Changes, Inverted Restart Planned for SPEED GT Race at Charlotte

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 16, 2007) -- Race fans have an exceptional show in store for them at the upcoming Lowe's Motor Speedway race in Charlotte, N.C., May 24. The traditional standing start, tire changes, and an inverted rolling restart are all on the program and under the lights for Round Four of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship.

Although this is not the series' first visit to the legendary 1.5-mile oval, it will be a unique event in SCCA SPEED World Challenge history. Unlike the 2000 race at Lowe's Motor Speedway, the course used by the SCCA SPEED GT cars will not use the infield road course. Instead, the entire oval will be used with two chicanes, one on the front straight that incorporates the pit exit, and a chicane located on the back straight as well.

Beginning with the SCCA SPEED World Challenge trademark standing start, the race will be divided into two sessions, each lasting no longer than 20 minutes. Once the first session has been completed, the pace car will pick up the field and escort them into pitlane. There, teams will change all four tires and make adjustments. All the work must be completed in five minutes and refueling will not be permitted.

During this intermission period, a ceremony will be held involving the "wheel of inversion" to determine the restart order. Numbered with positions one through five, the number that is landed on will indicate the position of the car that will make the restart in first place. If the wheel lands on one, there will be no inversion.

For the second session, cars will be lined-up in their order before the intermission, plus any inversion, and lapped cars will be placed at the back. The second session will commence with a double-file rolling restart.

"This is going to be the most thrilling race we've ever had on CTC Pole Night at Lowe's Motor Speedway," track President and General Manager H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler said. "Seeing these Vipers, Corvettes, BMWs and Porsches under the lights at a superspeedway will be spectacular. Just the thought of these automobiles makes people passionate---imagine what seeing them race after Cup qualifying will do. It's going to be a rush for every fan that comes through the gates."

Further fueling the anticipation leading up to the event, SCCA SPEED GT regulars will be joined by two NASCAR Nextel Cup stars; defending Nextel Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson and 2004 Rookie of the Year Kasey Kahne.

The race will air on SPEED, Saturday, June 2 at 4:00 p.m. (EDT). Fans can also log onto www.world-challenge.com for live timing and lap notes.

The series races this Saturday, May 19, at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.
