Cunningham and Nissan team up for assault on SCCA Speed Touring Car Championship.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (April 25, 2003) - Nissan announced today that three-time SCCA Speed World Challenge Champion Peter Cunningham and TeamRTR will campaign a new Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V in the 2003 Speed Touring Car Championship. Ron Stukenberg, Nissan Motorsports Marketing and Operations' Senior Manager, made the announcement today during a press conference at the 2003 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) International Auto Salon (IAS).
Cunningham, defending Speed World Challenge Touring Car Champion and TeamRTR owner, will carry the number one plate as he aims for his seventh professional driver's championship.
The TeamRTR Sentra SE-R Spec V, which started life as a powerful street car, evolved into a top-flight racing machine. The 2.5-liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine's output has been increased to 250+ horsepower and the stock SE-R's handling prowess has been enhanced with a full array of NISMO components. The SE-R Spec V will also be easy to spot on the track with its custom silver and black paint with large Nissan symbols on the hood, rear and sides.
"The incredible 2002 Speed Touring Car season saw Acura, BMW, and Mazda finish four points apart for the Manufacturer's Championship," said Cunningham. "They're all back for 2003, and Nissan is eager to compare its performance sedan against not only them, but against strong teams from other premium brand manufacturers like Lexus, Audi and Mercedes-Benz for the championship.
"I expect this year to have the greatest inter-manufacturer rivalry of production-based cars ever seen in road racing. Any driver or manufacturer winning the championships, or even winning a race, will have really accomplished something."
"Nissan has over three decades of racing heritage with production cars, starting with Pete Brock's BRE team in the early 1970s," said Stukenberg. "Nissan and NISMO are enthusiastic about showcasing the Sentra SE-R in the World Challenge series because it has great competition and solid 'return on investment.' The audience for this series is passionate and enthusiastic about driving, which directly aligns with Nissan's product philosophy.
"By aligning ourselves with TeamRTR and Peter Cunningham, we have positioned Nissan and NISMO with proven winners and great talent, both on the track and off."
TeamRTR, based in Saukville, Wis., is the only team in professional road racing supported by Nissan North America, Inc., and NISMO, Nissan's performance brand.
The TeamRTR Sentra SE-R Spec V will make its racing debut May 16-17, 2003 at Mosport International Raceway. For more information on the SCCA Speed World Challenge Championship, please visit www.world-challenge.com.
