Fort Worth, Texas, Audi S4 drivers Derek Bell and Michael Galati managed to finish 24th and 11th in a trouble filled Speedvision World Challenge Series race at Texas Motor Speedway.
Following an uncharacteristic second qualifying session in the morning, the Audi S4's of Bell and Galati started the one-hour race in 13th and 17th positions. Horsepower was the rule of the day on this modified oval track with Mustang's, Corvette's and Porsche's dominating the top starting positions.
The race began in the heat of the day at 1:00 p.m., with temperatures exceeding 106-degrees. Derek Bell was able to move-up through the field at the start some 10 positions before being hit in the left rear by a Mustang causing a tire to go flat. Following a pit stop to repair the tire, Bell rejoined the race at the back of the field. On lap 12 Bell was forced to return to the pits to change the right front tire following a puncture and was able to bring the Audi home in 24th position.
Michael Galati was able to improve on his starting position to running as high fourth in the race. Then, on lap 24, in the middle of turn four the right front tire exploded. Following a visit to the pits, Galati returned to the race to finish in 11th place.
Derek Bell, Legends of Motorsport/Audi S4 Competition: "I had a great start. I went to the outside into the infield turn and was able to pass about 10 cars only to be hit in the rear by a Mustang. Later in the race I was under heavy braking going into the chicane and the right front tire popped."
Michael Galati, Champion Audi/Audi S4 Competition: "I had a good start and settled in for the race. I was able to keep up with the top guys under braking and in the infield. I was on the turn four oval going about 135 mph when the tire went. I definitely think we had a top five car today."
Rod Bymaster, manager, Audi Sport North America: "Our strategy was to get a good start and hold our positions while the competition used up their cars in the heat. It was working for Michael before he had a tire let go. Michael had a real good chance to score top five points. Derek just had some tough luck." <pre> Audi Sport S4 Competition Season: Charlotte Derek Bell qualified 17th and finished 9th Mosport Derek Bell qualified 8th and finished 7th Michael Galati qualified 3rd and finished 2nd Lime Rock Derek Bell qualified 8th and finished 29th Michael Galati qualified 1st and finished 5th Sears Point Derek Bell qualified 8th and finished 5th Michael Galati qualified 3rd and finished 2nd Quebec Derek Bell qualified 14th and finished 25th Michael Galati qualified 10th and finished 20th Texas Derek Bell qualified 17th and finished 24th Michael Galati qualified 13th and finished 11th
