Aschenbach to drive in Speed GT Finale
October 9, 2005-Danbury, CT -- Twenty-one year old Lawson Aschenbach of Gaithersburg, MD, will be driving the 07 Farnbacher Loles Porsche GT3 Cup in the Speed World Challenge GT season finale in Monterey, CA. The announcement came a week before the October 16th race, which will determine both the driver's and manufacturer's championships in what many consider to be the most competitive road racing series in North America. The race will be held at the legendary Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca with its beautiful scenery, dramatic elevation changes and famous "corkscrew" turn.
"Awesome" Lawson made his only other Speed GT start and also his pro racing debut at the Denver round in August. Starting from fourth on the grid and rocketing to third at the start, Lawson was outstanding on the narrow street circuit and battled Scotsman Robin Liddell through much of the race to finish on the podium in a well-deserved third place. Lawson's teammate and reigning Porsche Super Cup Champion Wolf Henzler started on the pole and led the entire race to clinch his second win of the season with Liddell finishing in second. Lawson's drive proved not only his incredible skill but also his maturity behind the wheel.
Lawson's other recent successes came in the 2005 IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge series, where in only 2 races, he made his presence known. In the series' opening round in Atlanta, Lawson set the race's fastest lap and if not for contact from another competitor, he would have been a likely podium finisher. In the 2nd race in Mid-Ohio, Lawson battled pole sitter (and fellow Farnbacher Loles driver) Ricardo Imery in the rain and with a last lap pass, pulled out an impressive victory.
Aschenbach's racing career started in open wheel cars. Having begun racing at 8 in go-karts, Lawson went on to SCCA National Formula Ford, winning the Southeast series in 2001. During 2 years competing in the Formula Ford 2000 series, Lawson won the prestigious Road to Indy Oval Crown Championship in 2002. Last season, Lawson competed in Formula BMW and, had never driven a GT3 Cup car prior to this season.
Lawson attends Vanderbilt University where he is in his senior year with a double major in Math and in Engineering Science. In addition, Lawson will also receive a minor in Management of Technology, which helps dramatically in his understanding of the dynamics of race set-up and being able to communicate with team technicians.
Lawson's car is sponsored by the King Automotive Group. Wolf Henzler's primary sponsor, Applied Materials, Inc., is the world's largest supplier of products and services to the global semiconductor industry. The Farnbacher Loles Racing team is based in Danbury, CT. The Laguna Seca Speed GT race will be televised live on Speed Channel, October 16th at 5pm EST.
