3R-Racing tabs Mike Fitzgerald as team's lead SPEED World Challenge driver.
Denver, Colo. (December 19, 2002) - 3R-Racing announced today the addition of one of the nation's top drivers, Mike Fitzgerald, to the team for the 2003 SPEED World Challenge GT Championship. Fitzgerald will join drivers Phil McClure, Tim Wiens and Victor Contreras and a crew that was voted the "2002 SPEED GT Crew of the Year."
"We're very excited to have Mike as the lead driver of the 3R-Racing team for the 2003 season," said Wiens, who is also the owner of 3R-Racing. "Our team had an exceptional first year together, with a number of first place finishes, and Mike will keep us highly competitive in the season ahead. We're looking forward to great things."
Fitzgerald's racing career began in the early 1990s when he quickly became one of the most successful drivers in the showroom stock category of racing, winning championships and ranking among the all-time leaders in Motorola Cup/Grand Am Cup wins.
He moved into GT racing full-time in 1999 and has amassed track records and dozens of victories and podium finishes. During the 2000 season, Fitzgerald had his greatest successes driving Porsches, where he won eight of 24 races en route to becoming only the third American driver ever to win the prestigious Porsche Cup. He also won the 2000 Grand American Road Racing Association GTU Driver's Championship driving a Porsche GT3R for G&W Motorsports, winning five races, capturing two poles, and finishing on the podium in all nine starts.
Fitzgerald's career highlights also include four wins, three poles and three track records in 2000 World Challenge competition; winning both SPEED GT and SPEED Touring Car races on the same weekend at Road Atlanta; a GT class win in the 24 Hours of Daytona; and five top fives and three podiums in the 2002 SPEED Touring Car Championship.
3R-Racing has quickly established itself as one of the premier racing teams in the SPEED World Challenge GT Championship Series. In 2002, 3-R Racing recorded four victories, eight podiums and 11 top-five finishes with team drivers finishing third, 11th and 12th in the final SPEED GT point standings.
"What a great first season together as a team," said Wiens. "The entire race team competed very well, and I can't say enough about our crew. They were fantastic all season and worked hard to maintain three top racecars that performed very well on race day."
