Winter Testing with Velocity Motorsports in Sebring, Florida
Prospect Hill, NC- The Velocity Motorsports team recently completed a very successful test in Sebring, Florida. This was a test for teams competing in several formula car series. Several of the top Star-Mazda teams from the 2005 season were present for the test. Returning to the team for the test was 2005 Star Mazda Masters Champion John Pew. Joining the team at the test was 17 year old Logan Gomez and Star-Mazda regular Jon Branam. The Velocity team was well represented by race engineer, Ian Macpherson, crew chief, Keith Mellick, the team's lead mechanic, Lucas Griffin, and driver coach, Oswaldo Negri. The team also welcomed Eric Langbein as an engineer for the weekend.
John Pew, Velocity Motorsports driver
"The Sebring test went very well. The Velocity team did an excellent job getting my car ready and in excellent mechanical condition. We had some good data from last year. Ian Macpherson, Velocity's race engineer, tweaked the car until we got it comfortable into turn one and turn seventeen, the key turns at Sebring. By the second day with encouragement from Oswaldo Negri, driver coach, I turned a 2:01.0 on my third lap out on new tires. This time would have put me in the top ten in last years qualifying. I am very pleased with the test results. Thank you to my sponsor, NVG Residential, www.nvgresidential.com. I look forward to the opening race in Sebring and the 2006 season."

"John Pew did an incredible job over the day and a half that he drove. By the second morning he put in a lap of 2:01.0, more than two full seconds quicker than his previous best lap at the track.
"Logan Gomez stepped into a pro-Mazda for the first time on Tuesday and after a day of getting to know the car; he began tuning in earnest on Wednesday. His feedback was constructive and well thought out, especially for a young man with so little car experience.
"Jon Branam stepped into our car on Thursday; unfortunately, he was running with a huge crowd of SCCA open wheel cars. While a clear lap could not be had at any price, Jon found the car immediately to his liking!"
Ken Erb, Velocity Motorsports team owner
"The team was pleased with the quick times that John Pew turned in for this test. We know that he will see the top ten this season.
"Logan Gomez did a really good job especially considering he has very little car experience. He is a very mature, calm 17 year old who gave us good car feedback.
"Jon Branam ran four short sessions on the SCCA test day. Even with the brutal traffic, he was able to post some competitive lap times. Jon's observation halfway through the first session was that this car was well balanced and well setup."
The Velocity Motorsports team will return to Carolina Motorsports Park for another testing session on January 20th.
