Pre Sebring test at Road Atlanta

Prospect Hill, North Carolina USA. In preparation for the Star Mazda Season opener at Sebring International Raceway the team participated in its second test with newly signed driver James Davison. James was joined by Star Mazda veteran Rob Bunker and Formula BMW competitor Yannick Hofman.

James Davison 2007 Star Mazda Race Driver
"Considering this was a single day test it was very productive for me. I learned the capabilities of the car on a high speed circuit and felt comfortable setting fast lap times. Once again I connected well with my engineer Peter Mercier and the entire Velocity team did a fantastic job. It was only my second test I have done before the first race however Velocity and I have accomplished quite a bit. I am confident that we are ready to hit the ground running next week at Sebring."

Rob Bunker 2006 Star Mazda Race Driver
"We had a few things we wanted to accomplish, mostly on high-speed portions of the track. That made Road Atlanta a great track to test at. We really wanted to work on getting back to the throttle assertively in high-speed sections of the track. I got to test with James Davison. We were the two fastest cars on track and that's always a good feeling.

"It was a completely new chassis to me, but I went out and posted the best times I've ever posted at that track. The setup was new to me, but it was tried and tested by Velocity and their engineers. It ended up being something I really liked. We spent about a half an hour going over what the car should do before I even set foot in it, just to make sure I absolutely knew what to expect. They had a lot of background knowledge about the car and about engineering in general."

Pete Mercier Lead Engineer
It was certainly busy times at the shop getting ready for this test. When it came down to it the cars ran very well. The developments we made over the winter definitely paid off. James was very impressive, posting the fastest time of the day. He is a very talented racing driver, I don't hand these compliments out very often, but this kid is the real deal. Rob really surprised me with his speed and feedback. I have not worked with him before and was pleasantly surprised. I hope we get to work together in the future.

Yannick was also new to me and drove very well. He was a bit under the weather so he didn't do as many laps as the other guys. He proved to have good feedback and was able to get up to speed quickly. It is our goal to continue working with him and to help him develop.

Price Cobb Team Principal/Director Race Operations
It was a pleasure to see how the winter's preparation and investment in people and time came to fruition during our test this past week at Road Atlanta. Better yet it was wonderful to work with three outstanding up and coming drivers who were record pace quick without ever putting a wheel wrong.

We look forward to a strong Championship run with James Davison, while continuing to build our relationship with Rob Bunker and Yannick Hofman. The entire team is excited to be getting the Championship season off the ground next week at Sebring.
