Velocity Motorsports - Back on the track testing at CMP

Prospect Hill, N.C.- Fresh off a fantastic sixth place finish by rookie, Logan Gomez, and a masters series win by John Pew at Sebring, the Velocity Motorsports team hits the pavement testing at Carolina Motorsports Park in neighboring South Carolina. The team returned to the sun drenched test track to work on setups for the new Houston street circuit race next month. The team was joined by their new standout rookie, Logan Gomez, and Star- Mazda newcomer, Jep Thornton.

Ken Erb, Team Principal
"In preparation for the next race of the season on the tight street course at Houston, we booked two test events at Carolina Motorsports Park. Working closely together Logan Gomez, lead mechanic Russ Gaglio, driver coach Tom Long and assistant engineer Fred Huscher, were able to design a comprehensive test plan, implement it and accomplish more than we have in quite some time. I would attribute this to Logan's learning the car as well as jelling with the team. While our other drivers, Mark Patterson and John Pew, told me that Jep would be quick once he got some seat time, I have to be honest and say that I was surprised by just how quickly he got up to speed. Jep will be piloting Mark's car for a few races that conflict with Mark's Rolex Sports Car Series schedule."

Keith Mellick, Director of Race Operations
"After a very positive season opening race at Sebring, we prepared the cars for a two day event at CMP. Taking advantage of an exclusive track rental, we were able to test different track configurations as well as running realistic race simulations, including yellow flag restarts. The entire crew did an excellent job preparing the cars and worked very well together. I would say that we are really hitting our stride and I can't wait for the second race of the season to get here!"

Logan Gomez, Driver car #23
"The test at CMP was a huge success! Ken Erb is doing a great job using his experience and background to form a championship winning team. The knowledge that the team and I have gained about each other is tremendous. I am becoming more accustomed to the way a formula car team program works. Although there are many similarities between shifter-kart racing and formula car racing teams, there is definitely a higher level of professionalism displayed throughout the Velocity Motorsports team." "During testing we ran the car through its many different setups so during future races we can make the necessary changes with confidence that it will work. With two more testing days on our schedule before the Houston race, I feel that the team and I are going to be well prepared to make a run for the Star Mazda Championship this season."

Jep Thornton, Driver car #60
"The test at CMP went as smoothly as can be. The Velocity Motorsports team had the car prepped exceptionally well. Since I had never driven a Formula Mazda, the car was dialed down in the beginning, but as the day wore on we slowly began turning the wick up as I became more comfortable with the car. The car was very impressive and I was able to get my lap times down to levels that were acceptable. On Tuesday we ran a simulated race for 45 minutes with two simulated yellows. All in all it was a very good test. I look forward to racing with the team in Montreal and at Trois Rivieres where I have many laps of experience."

The Velocity Motorsports team looks forward to returning to CMP next week where they will be joined by John Pew in the #15 car. Catch all of the Sebring race action on the SPEED Channel this Sunday at 4pm Eastern Time and on Monday, April 10th ,at Noon Eastern Time.
