Oh Canada! David Ostella makes his first home start of the 2010 season this weekend as the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear turns North for the first of two Canadian events. The 41st Annual Grand Prix of Trois- Rivières will be the first for Ostella, and the teenager from Maple, Ontario, is very much looking forward to running in his home and native land.
"The fans there are crazy about racing, that's for sure!" Ostella said prior to departing for Quebec. "They recognize and really support the Canadians too, since there aren't that many in racing, and they really get behind the event. It's great to race in an environment like that, and it's great to be coming back home!"
In his first trip to the concrete confines of the GP3R street course last year, Ostella produced his best non-oval finish of his Star Mazda rookie season when he capitalized during a green-white-checker finish. "I remember the top ten were very close together and then the caution at the end stacked up the whole field," Ostella recalled. "Then I just timed the re- start right and got from eighth to seventh on the last lap. It was a good finish and one we really felt good about toward the end of the season."
Ostella will be looking to recapture the positive feelings beginning with a half-hour evening practice on Friday before practice and qualifying on Saturday. Round ten of the Star Mazda Championship then takes its standing start at 1pm Sunday afternoon.
"It's a temp track and it really has no grip at all, especially in the beginning," Ostella said in looking forward. "But even though it's a hard track to drive and the concentration level is so high, I really love the challenge of the street courses. Having the experience from last year should help, and we've just got to go in there and get a solid finish."
Sunday also marks the third race in three weekends for Ostella and the Star Mazda Championship, and there will be little time to rest as Rounds 11 and 12 will come on consecutive weekends to close the month. Teams will travel from Trois-Rivières to Road America, then head back east to Ostella's true home race track - Mosport International Raceway.
As always, David is able to compete thanks to generous support from Global Precast Intercontinental, Alpinestars, Masters Insurance, Pro Green Demoliton and RAW Integrated Ltd.
