TOSHIHIRO DEKI CAPTURES LEAD IN EXPERT CLASS WITH A WIN AT IOWA SPEEDWAY
Placentia, CA -- The Pizza Ranch 100 was the seventh round in the 2009 Star Mazda Series presented by Goodyear. The event was held at the 7/8th mile high banked oval at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa on Friday, July 10. It was to be an action packed day with two practices, qualifying and the race all held within a 12 hour period.
The first practice was scheduled for 9:30 A.M., but half way through the session a torrential downpour had all teams racing for cover. Fortunately, the storm passed rather quickly and the second practice went off on schedule. In the second practice, Toshihiro was able to record a lap of 23.271 seconds, within one second of the fastest time.
Qualifying started at 3:00 P.M. with Toshi the second car out on the track. On his second lap he was able to record a time of 23.642 seconds putting him 19th for the start of the race.
The 100 lap race started at 8:30 P.M. under the lights, another first for the Star Mazda Series 2009 season. As they came around for the green flag start, Toshi Deki's main concern was staying clear of any problems up front. Unlike the prior race at Milwaukee, it was a clean first lap, but on Lap 2 two cars up front got together bringing out the yellow lights around the track. Toshi was able to avoid the additional accidents that took place throughout the 100 laps. His 11th place finish gave him the win for the Expert Class and vaulted Toshi Deki into the lead for that category.
After the race Toshihiro said "I was very pleased with the race and am happy to get my second win of the year and take over 1st in the Expert Class. I am looking forward to the next race at the Autobahn in Joliet. I am looking to continue moving up and I think I can finish top 10 there."
