AIM Autosport hopes for a home-track advantage in the Star Mazda Championship race during this weekend's Steelback Grand Prix of Toronto. The veteran Canadian team, based in nearby Woodbridge, Ont., will field the No. 33 Discovery Channel Canada Pro Formula Mazda for Devin Cunningham of St-Bruno, Que., and the No. 35 Mazda for Natacha Gachnang of St-Gingolph, Switzerland.

The pair hope to repeat their recent success in Portland, Ore., where they combined for a one-two finish. Gachnang added another podium finish in Cleveland, Ohio.

Gachnang hasn't raced on the 1.755-mile Toronto street circuit, but she has experience at the similar Norisring circuit in Germany. She also explored the Toronto course in advance to get a head start on the weekend.

"I'm very excited to race in Toronto because the team is Canadian," she said. "The track looks pretty good for a street track. It will be difficult because we only have two practice sessions, so we will have to be fast to adapt the car and learn the track. We did a lap with the scooter and also with the golf cart and with the street car. It looks pretty fast, but it's always difficult to say -- I will see when I go with my race car. But I know the team will do a good car."

AIM has a strong history on the Toronto street circuit, but team co-owner Keith Willis knows it can be treacherous.

"AIM Autosport has had great success in Toronto, but it's a track where anything can happen. I'm not worried about Devin and Natacha because they always do a great job; I'm more worried about something else happening to them," he said. "But being back in Toronto is great; it's good to have the team back running at home. We need to keep our momentum, keep the podiums up."

The Toronto Star Mazda race is scheduled for Saturday, July 7.
