AND THE LAST SHALL BE FAST -- PETER DEMPSEY ON POLE FOR TONIGHT'S STAR MAZDA CHAMPIONSHIP PIZZA RANCH 100 UNDER THE LIGHTS AT IOWA SPEEDWAY

Iowa Speedway (July 10, 2009) -- Patiently waiting out the minute-by-minute torture of single-car qualifying, Peter 'The Irish Steamroller' Dempsey scored his first pole of the season this afternoon at Iowa Speedway, putting his #3 Juncos Racing / HOOTERS / Motorsport Ireland / Queyside.ie Mazda on the inside of the front row for tonight's Pizza Ranch 100 with a lap of 22.200 sec. (141.892 mph). And Dennis Navarro, the man who held the top time for most of the session and was in Dempsey's crosshairs on that lap, will start on the outside of the front row with a lap of 22.216 sec. (141.790 mph) in his #21 Andersen Racing / Navarro Medicines Distribution / Allied Interior Products Mazda.

"The learning curve has been steep but brilliant, but to be on the pole here at Iowa Speedway shows just how good a team Juncos Racing is and how well we are working together," said Dempsey, currently second in the championship battle. "You can't be on pole at an oval without a good car and they worked until three in the morning to give me one. I'm delighted to be able to reward that effort with a pole. Now if we can just carry that into the race, I'll have a good chance of scoring my second win of the season."

Current championship leader Adam Christodoulou will start from third on the grid with a lap of 22.240 sec. (141.637 mph) in the #11 JDC Motorsports / Molecule Mazda and beside him will be Alex Ardoin who drove his #51 JDC Motorsports / Oral & Facial Surgery Center / Twister Trailer Mazda to a best lap of 22.331 sec. (141.060 mph). Conor Daly, the 2008 Skip Barber Pro Series champion and winner of the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Driver Development Ladder Scholarship, will start from 8th in the #22 Andersen Racing / College Network / Indeck / Cytomax Mazda.

Twenty-one Star Mazda Championship cars, driven by racers from seven different countries, will take the green flag at 8:30 pm for tonight's 100 laps of non-stop, wheel-to-wheel racing under the lights of Iowa Speedway in Friday's first annual Pizza Ranch 100.
