LADY LYNX -- SENSKE QUALIFIES SEVENTH IN STAR MAZDA SEASON OPENER AT SEBRING
Lynx Racing driver Sara Senske drove her #19 Lynx Racing/S3 Racing Star Mazda to a lap of 2:13.3 seconds -- good for seventh-place spot on the grid in qualifying Thursday for the season-opener Star Mazda race at Sebring.
The Star Mazda event, being run as a support race at the legendary Superflow 12 Hours of Sebring, has attracted a field of 37 cars for the 45-minute race around the 3.7-mile airport course.
"All the cars at the front are bunched together very tightly in terms of time," says Senske. "The track is very challenging because there are slow, medium and high-speed turns, and pavement changes from asphalt to concrete, which is really difficult to find the ideal setup for. With 17 turns on the track, you have to be on the ragged edge all the time, because if you lose a tenth of a second in each turn, by the end of the lap, you're 1.7 seconds in back of the leaders. With a field this big, the first lap is really going to be a harum-scarum, sort-em-out situation, and so to win is going to take a really good start, some aggressive driving and some luck."
Senske's S3 Racing teammate, Joey Hand, is on the pole for the event, and fellow S3 drivers Bruno Lambert and Alan Benson are also in the top seven. Lambert will also be co-driving with Mike Conte, for whom Lynx Racing will field a car in the KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship, in Conte's Contemporary Motorsports #17 Porsche running in the GT class of the 12-hour race.
The Star Mazda race is scheduled to take the green flag today at 1:00 p.m.
