All Four Andersen Walko Racing Drivers Looking for Valuable Points at Infineon
SONOMA, Calif., July 13 - Although Raphael Matos has won four Star Mazda races so far this year, all four of Andersen Walko Racing's drivers - Robbie Pecorari, Graham Rahal, Jonathan Klein, and Pablo Donoso - could take over the point lead this weekend at a doubleheader here at Infineon Raceway.
Pecorari, of Aston, Pa., and Rahal, of New Albany, Ohio, have the best chances thanks to their one-two finish at Pikes Peak July 3, but Klein and Donoso are within striking distance too. Pecorari and Rahal are second and third in the current point standings while Klein, of Long Grove, Ill., and Donoso, of Santiago, Chile, are seventh and eighth.
"This is the only doubleheader of the year," Pecorari said. "It could be the changing point.
"Coming off a win at Pikes Peak was nice," Pecorari continued. "All I want to do is keep the roll going. With the point standings, if I keep driving well, this race will close the gap even more and that's what I'd like to see happen."
Going into this weekend Pecorari is not only confident in his own chances, but he is confident for his teammates as well.
"All four AWR boys have been up front," Pecorari said. "They all have a chance to be on the podium this weekend.
"As for me, I feel as if my chances are good," he added. "We have a good set-up and a great car. Plus, I attended the Jim Russell camp here so I know the track very well. I feel confident going into the weekend."
The team tested on the 2.53-mile, 12-turn Infineon road course upon leaving Pikes Peak.
"Testing went pretty well," Pecorari said. "The car was close to perfect. It handled well and was well balanced the whole day.
"The track was a little different than it will be on race day because there were all kinds of cars at the test," Pecorari continued. "The rubber that was down will change on race day, and all we can do is wait to see what type they put down.
"It is our first time on this particular compound of Goodyear tires too," he added. "That will be a challenge, plus the track is tricky with all the d ifferent elevations. But I'm happy going into the race."
The Star Mazda doubleheader supports an ALMS headliner. The first Infineon Star Mazda race will be broadcast on the SPEED Channel starting at 2 p.m. EDT Sunday, Aug. 7 and the second race will be shown on the same network at 1 p.m. EDT Sunday, Aug. 14. Highlights of Pecorari's victory at Pikes Peak will be included in the Infineon broadcasts.
