One point away from second place Kevin Lacroix nurses the UniSelect car to 4th at Road America

Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, August 20th, 2006. -- Kevin Lacroix admits he had an ordinary weekend but managed to come home with the 4th place points in the ninth round of the Star Mazda championship on the beautiful Road America race track in Wisconsin. The 17-year old French Canadian lacked the necessary speed in the 18-lap race and was not able to contend for the victory. He finished in seventh place but nets fourth place points, stretching his series of eight finishes in Top 6 points. By doing so, he remains in third place in the standings but only one point out of second. He also widens the margin in the Best Rookie standings to 32 points.

"We couldn't find enough speed this weekend, declared Lacroix. I protected my position in the race but was not able to close the gap on the leaders even after full course yellows. In the qualifying sessions, there was so much traffic on the track I could never find enough room for a complete clean lap and I ended up in ninth place. I had a good start and made up three places in the first lap: then I held my ground but wasn't able to reel in the front runners. I ended up seventh but was awarded fourth place points. I never cared about those cars ( Wilkins, Donoso, Stover) and didn't mix with them because I knew they didn't count. One of them (Donoso) shut the door when I tried to overtake him for second and almost took my front wing away. There are strange things going on in this series."

One point shy from second in the standings

There were 39 cars entered in this round and all of them took part in the qualifying session, instead of the usual fast and slow groups. "I always had a backmarker in front of me on a hot lap, said he. Although I expected a better weekend, I'm happy with the end results because we benefited from some opponents bad results. I have learned this season to be patient on the track and to rake as many points after an event. The only shadow is not to have won an event so far but this is something I want to do in the last three rounds."

Carrio leads the standings with 330 points, followed by Potekhen with 287 and Lacroix at 286. He also stretched his lead in the rookie column to 32 points against Varsha at 254.
