Goshen Motorsports Disappointed with Road America Result
Placentia, CA-The sixth race of the Star Mazda series was part of the Generac 500 at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin August 7 to 10, 2008. After a great performance at Portland, Billy Goshen was looking forward to his first time at the famous Road America course.
The first practice session started at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday morning. Billy was ready to head out to the grid, but was unable to get the #82 car in gear. As he unstrapped and climbed out of the car, little did the Goshen Motorsport Team realize the transmission problem was an omen as to how the weekend would go. The crew was able to get the problem corrected in time for the second practice at 1:00 P.M., but a series of red flags limited the session to only six timed laps. Having skipped testing earlier in the year, missing the first practice and a limited second practice, Goshen was well off the pace in the third session (final) of the day.
Billy was able to improve his time in Friday morning's practice, but still had some catching up to do. Qualifying started Friday afternoon at 4:00 P.M. with a full 45 minute session. Midway through qualifying, Billy was still unable to match the time of the first 5 cars, so the crew brought him into the paddock to make a few changes. Immediately upon returning to the track, a crash brought out a red flag ending the session 10 minutes early. With no additional laps, Billy had to settle for the 13th qualifying position, but his time of 2:07.553 was only 0.4 seconds off the 6th place qualifier.
The 6th race of the year started at 2:25 P.M. Saturday afternoon on the 4.048 mile course. Despite starting P-13, Billy was confident he could move up and challenge for a top five finish. Goshen was able to avoid a two car tangle at the start and completed the first lap in 11th. Even with several early full course cautions, Billy was able to continue moving through the field and on lap 5 recorded the 6th fastest time of the race at 2:08.927. By mid race, Goshen was running 8th when another full course caution came out. As he slowed observing the yellow, the #48 car driven by Kristy Kester passed the #82 car. Crew Chief Richie Hearn radioed Billy to retake his position, but a corner worker reported that Goshen passed under the yellow. As the race went green, the Star Mazda officials ordered the #82 car to do a 30 second stop and go. After completing the penalty, Billy was able to pass enough cars to finish 14th, but it was a devastating blow to the team, especially with the points standing so close.
After the race, Billy said "apparently someone was confused, because I was definitely in front of Kester. I guess that is part of racing. I believe I could have finished as high as 6th, but I have to put this behind me and focus on the race next weekend in Trois Rivieres", Canada.
