The Pro Mazda series is going oval racing this weekend.
The 2014 Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires hits The Milwaukee Mile for its penultimate race weekend of the season. Spencer Pigot lost only three points to Scott Hargrove at the previous race weekend at Mid-Ohio, but still has 14 points over the young Canadian.
Pigot has been the most consistent driver of the season with only three finishes outside of the top five and no results worse than ninth. He has five victories coming into the last oval of the season, and he’s looking forward to Milwaukee after a third place finish at the other oval race this season at Lucas Oil Raceway.
“I think we’ve got good pace on the ovals, Milwaukee’s a bit of a different track, you know it’s a lot faster, a lot bigger but we’ve got a lot of tack time to try to fine tune the car and see what we can do,” Pigot said during the weekly Tribute Racing radio show Climbing the Grid: Road to Indy.
Hargrove is hoping to repeat his second place performance at Lucas Oil Raceway and put his Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing car into the points lead.
However, there will be other drivers looking to pounce in the championship standings. For example, Nicolas Costa has been on a roll since Lucas Oil Raceway, scoring five top five finishes in the last five races, including a first and second at Mid-Ohio.
Another driver looking to advance in the points is Garett Grist. He won at Lucas Oil Raceway but had some bad luck at Houston with a sixth and ninth place finish in the two races around NRG park. However, a win at Mid-Ohio could bolster his chances for third in the points as he announced at Mid-Ohio that he will be returning to the Pro Mazda championship for 2015.
The Pro Mazda race will be run on Saturday afternoon at 6:30. The race will be 100 laps.
