Pecorari and Donoso Qualify Third and Fourth at PPIR

FOUNTAIN, Colo., July 2 - Although three of the four Andersen Walko Racing drivers competing in the Star Mazda event at Pikes Peak International Raceway this weekend are making their first start ever on an oval racetrack, they all qualified in the top 10 Saturday for Sunday's 75-lap race.

Robbie Pecorari and Pablo Donoso had the best results in quals and they'll start side by side in row two. Pecorari was third in qualifying with a lap of 25.978 (138.579 mph), while Donoso was fourth with a 26.031 (138.297 mph).

Jonathan Klein, who is making only his second oval-track start ever (he competed in an event on the oval at Phoenix International Raceway last year), qualified seventh with a 26.182 (137.499 mph). Graham Rahal will start ninth with a qualifying time of 26.260 (137.091 mph).

James Hinchcliffe won the pole with a lap in 25.803 (139.519 mph). Point leader Raphael Matos qualified tenth with a 26.293 (136.919 mph).

Rahal was second only to Adrian Carrio in practice earlier in the day and Klein and Pecorari were right behind him on that chart. When all the practice sessions were combined Carrio was fastest with a 25.559 (140.851 mph) followed by Rahal with a 26.046 (138.217 mph); Klein with a 26.083 (138.021 mph) and Pecorari with a 26.104 (137.91 mph). Donoso was eighth in practice with a 26.236 (137.216 mph).

The closest call for the AWR squad during the day was when Pecorari had his hands full missing a spinning Doug Peterson near the end of his last practice session. "I missed both him and the wall by inches," Pecorari said.
