World Speed Motorsports New Jersey Preview
Hacquard and Cumming in Top Ten on Promoter Test Day
The 2008 Star Mazda Championship Presented by Goodyear is in New Jersey today for the start of a double header at the recently completed New Jersey Motorsports Park. World Speed drivers Taylor Hacquard and Chris Cumming were out in the promoter test today and posted times in the top ten.
"I don't think we should have any problems getting up to speed this weekend," stated a confident Hacquard. "The New Jersey track is pretty much new to everyone competing this weekend so that helps level the playing field a little. The fact that it's a double-header meeting simply means I get two cracks at it to hopefully get a pair of decent finishes. I wasn't necessarily expecting to be sitting as high as tenth in the championship at this stage of my rookie season so I'm definitely happy with how things are progressing."
Cumming is leading the Experts Championship as he opens his weekend at the new facility. "Chris has been working hard at improving his game, and we aren't surprised that he is leading the Expert Championship," noted Team Manager John Olsen. "What we are surprised at is how many times he has been in the mix with the young lions of the series."
Race nine takes place on Saturday the 13th at 3:30 local time, and race ten starts at 2:15 on Sunday. The weekend will also feature the Mazda powered Atlantic Championship. Rounding out the event weekend will be a Miata Cup race featuring identically prepared Mazda Miatas in exciting door handle to door handle racing action. A wide array of Lifestyle and Tuner events will round out the Mazda excitement and offer both on track and off track activities for all tastes.
Infineon Raceway NASCAR Foundation Blood & Marrow Drive
Racetracks from 24 states participated in the annual NASCAR Foundation Blood & Marrow Drive. The event provided an opportunity for fans to donate blood and volunteer their names for the National Marrow Donor Program® Registry. World Speed Motorsports' staff joined a large contingent of race fans and other tenants from Infineon Raceway to participate in the nationwide program.
"It's nice to be able to do something for the community, and a majority of our staff took part in the event," stated World Speed Operations Manager Mark Milazzo. "Our guys are tough as nails and are used to giving blood, sweat, and tears everyday so just giving blood was like a vacation for them. One of our guys was not healthy enough to give blood this year but he is making it his goal to shape up for next year's blood drive."
The largest effort of its kind within the motorsports industry, The NASCAR Foundation Blood & Marrow Drive has collected enough pints of blood to potentially save more than 17,000 lives since its launch in 2006. More than 1,500 members were added to the National Marrow Donor Program® Registry giving hope to the 6,000 patients searching the Registry every day.
World Speed Loses Team Mascot and Office Assistant
Sears Point Icon Passes Away
This morning Tilly, World Speed's ever present short legged Corgi dog passed away while working in her office. "We'll really miss having Tilly around, stated Team Owner Telo Stewart. "She would come to all of our meetings, and of course would try to hang out with us anytime we were having any kind of a snack. She also kept most of the mechanics in line, and guarded the accounting department."
Tilly leaves behind three sons Ollie, Louie, and Jack who are all part timers at World Speed, so it is expected that the UPS guy will continue to be tripped, and mechanics will continue to be randomly attacked at least for the foreseeable future.
Tilly worked at Ian Gordon Racing, Lynx Racing, Finlay Motorsports, Cameron Karting, and World Speed Motorsports and was friends with many of the people who work and visit Infineon Raceway.
