MICHAEL FURFARI SET TO DEBUT WITH JUNCOS RACING AT SEBRING
FORT PIERCE, FLORIDA (March 18, 2009) - When the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear takes its initial green flag Friday, March 20th, there will be no driver looking forward to the occasion more than Ontario teenager Michael Furfari. While returning stars and late signing drivers rounded out the field as late as last week, the sixteen-year-old rookie has been testing for race one of 2009 for well over a year with his new team Juncos Racing.
The Star Mazda Championship is running in support of the 57th Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, and through four Promoter Test Sessions on Monday and Tuesday Furfari has looked right at home. After a cautious shakedown run on Monday morning, the young Canadian timed P12 Monday afternoon with a lap time of 2:04.042 seconds. Things have only improved since as Furfari has become more comfortable in his new surroundings. He dropped a full second from that time Tuesday morning, and in his final session of the day matched his car number at P13 with a time of 2:01.386 seconds.
Wednesday morning the on-track action became Official and in the one practice slot for the Star Mazda Championship Furfari was P11 in the field of 28, this time at 2:01.622 seconds. Being a heartbeat from the top ten is no small feat for the rookie formula car driver, as Furfari was unable to attend the January Spring Training Test due to age restrictions. Missing the dateline by a matter of days, Furfari has since turned sixteen and is ready to begin his formula car career in Sebring.
