American Joel Miller leaves New Jersey with a pair of top 5 finishes and closes within 1 point of the Championship lead.
Qualifying for race one of the double header weekend was a disappointment as his rear sway bar (suspension component) broke early in the session. Driving around the problem he managed an 11th place starting position for race 1 because of this. The lights went green at 2pm Saturday, and Miller started his trek back to the front. There was only one full course caution throughout the race so the majority was run under green conditions. In the endJoel passed the checkered flag 5th. Afterwards Miller commented, "Today was about salvaging points. Now the focus is on to tomorrow and what it will take to get the job done."
On Sunday Miller was back in his fashion at the front. Qualifying was going smoothly, and he was among the top 3 all session long. However, the call for new tires came late which resulted in only 2 laps being ran with the fresh rubber. "I should have come in one lap earlier for tires. I pushed hard on those two laps but the best time for new tires is lap 3 and 4. It was a bummer because I think we had the pace, but I will take 5th today to start with seeing how the weekend has been going," commented Joel afterwards.
The start for race two was a bit more interesting as Miller had to avoid a car in front that had a broken suspension component coming out of turn 1. A caution period followed and on the restart Joel was again defending as the car was taking time to get up to running speed. A car made an optimistic passing attempt going into the hairpin, but Joel was able to hold him off by going around the outside. However, he lost a lot of time to the leaders by doing this. During the course of the race he made up the total distance lost to the lead group and made the pass into 4th with two laps to go. Miller was coming to the front but ran out of time when the checkered dropped.
He finished 4th taking another top 5 to his name. Also, he moved up in the championship to 2nd only one point out of the lead. After the feature race Miller was quoted, "Even thought I am happy to move up in the championship I am frustrated. First off I have to thank my mechanic Robert Simpson for his hard work this weekend, but all in all the car is not yet a winning car."
This coming weekend isround 6 in the championship which will be on the famous Milwaukee Mile in Wisconsin.
