G&W Motorsports' Coleman Looking for First Podium Finish at Mosport
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario (August 6, 2004) -- G&W Motorsports rookie Brad Coleman (Houston, Texas) clocked some impressive lap times during the Star Mazda Series' practice at Mosport International Raceway today. The 16-year-old will seek his first podium finish in the series during Saturday's sprint race, part of the Toronto Grand Prix of Mosport.
Coleman was among the 10 fastest competitors during the opening practice session, turning a 1:16.018 lap around the 2.5-mile, 10-turn road course. The driver of the Podium-sponsored No. 33 Formula Mazda was less than a second off the leader's pace during practice.
The 2003 Fran-Am West Coast champion is one of the youngest competitor in the Star Mazda Series this season. Several of the rookie's races have been cut short by on-track incidents this season, but Team Manager Price Cobb has been impressed with how much Coleman's driving skills have improved as the season has progressed.
After starting from the back of the field at Infineon Raceway due to a technical issue in qualifying, the rookie was able pass a dozen of his competitors in only the first three laps of the race before being taking out while completing a pass in the carousel.
Coleman's race came to an end before it really started two weeks ago in Portland, when the No. 33 Mazda became entangled in a multi-car accident in the track's treacherous turn one just after the green flag fell.
This weekend, Coleman looks to redeem himself. With his impressive lap times during practice, the luck of a clean race should definitely give the rookie a good shot at his best finish of the season.
Star Mazda Series qualifying will be held at 8 a.m., on Saturday, and the 45-minute race will get underway at 12:35 p.m.
