Daniel Di Leo Scores Another Podium in Mid-Ohio
"Extended point lead will help in the latter half of the season"
June 28, 2004 -- Toronto, ON -- The 'Canadian Sensation' Daniel Di Leo (Star Race Cars, Select Auto Collision, WTF Solutions, Autosports Media) scored his second podium finish in as many races at this past weekends Pro Formula Mazda event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. Joining his teammate on the podium, Di Leo garnered the third position and an increase in points in his championship lead.
Di Leo started the race weekend in fine form by qualifying in the second position of the 41 car field. Hoping for the pole position, Di Leo would have to work hard to pursue his second victory of the season
During the main event on Saturday afternoon, Di Leo and his Star Race Cars Team battled an ill-handling Mazda. "We had several problems all weekend that left me consistently slower than others on the straights here at Mid-Ohio," explained DiLeo in a phone interview from the track. "The crew put in a lot of long hours working on the car and while I would've preferred another victory I'm pleased that we were able to finish on the podium." Di Leo had a fierce battle with some fellow competitors but the Sebring winner came out on top to take the third position.
"I'm really looking forward to the rest of the year," commented Di Leo. "I think after the first two races a majority of the competitors know who is fast and who they will have to beat for the championship. I think the battle will be great and I am just glad that I am out front early."
The 22-year-old Markham, ON resident currently leads the Star Mazda North American points championship by eight over his nearest rival. Di Leo also is in command of the Rookie of the Year honors by out pacing all other rookies in both events and gaining a significant 25 point advantage.
The Star Mazda North American Championship will have no rest as the drivers will travel to Lime Rock Park for the July 4th event.
