Andreas Desmarais Finishes 15th in Star Mazda at Sebring
Sebring, Florida - Andreas Desmarais, driving the number 43 Wheels Recondre/Racers Edge/Star Mazda, finished in 15th in his first ever professional Star Mazda race today at historic Sebring.
Sebring marked the inaugural event for the new 2004 Pro Formula Mazda racecars. The 240 horsepower, carbon fiber composite racer is designed to offer equal footing for all competitors, no drivetrain enhancements allowed. The engines are sealed and the driver is responsible for suspension adjustments to maximize the handling of the car - making it a real driver's series.
Thursday's qualifying session was disappointing for the 18-year old racer. "We were chasing a miss-fire and I couldn't use the full power of the motor. I qualified with a 2:02.625 in 19th, I expected a lot better." said Andre.
The young racer was a little timid at the start of the race, but soon settled into a rhythm. "It was my fist start in a professional car race, but as soon as the field went through turn one I was able to get my composure and focus on being consistent," said Desmarais. "We had been fighting some little problems all week with the car. We had some issues with the motor sputtering and we thought that the Racers Edge crew had fixed it, but it came back in the race. The motor seemed to be loading up and would not rev beyond 7800 rpm [500 less than maximum], this cost me more than a second a lap. Even with the sputter I was able to catch three cars in front of me at the end and move up a few more positions."
The shifter kart graduate learned that frustration is apart of racing. "Yes I am disappointed when I look at the finishing order, but I was able to get some good seat time in the car and I know if we didn't have that engine issue I could have finished in the top ten."
The team is scheduled to test within the next month in preparation for the next race at Mid-Ohio on June 26.
