Klein Finishes Fifth at Mosport for AWR in Star Mazda Competition
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Canada, Aug. 7 - Andersen Walko Racing's Jonathan Klein held off Moses Smith by a car length to finish fifth in the 30-lap, 30-car Star Mazda race presented by Goodyear at Mosport International Raceway here Saturday afternoon.
"We got another top five, so we're really ecstatic!" the young driver from Long Grove, Ill. said of his run in the AWR entry sponsored by Kalfact Plastics; Fettes, Love and Sieben; Nexus Distribution Corp.; Midwest Steel & Services; Ironclad and ProStar.
Although he's a rookie in this series, it was Klein's second top-five finish of the year so far.
Michael McDowell won the race over point leader Dan DiLeo, polesitter Raphael Matos, Scott Jenkins and Klein.
After qualifying 11th, Klein actually started tenth when one driver was penalized for using illegal fuel.
"On the start we made a pass or two in turn one on the outside, and then we went to a full-course caution," Klein explained later. "After that we just settled in, and we had an excellent rhythm for the race."
Klein noted that several changes the team made this weekend were important factors in his fine finish.
"We made some changes to the shocks before the race, and it made the car very consistent," he said. "Dan [team co-owner Dan Andersen] suggested that we start to use nitrogen instead of oxygen in the tires, and that helped with our tire wear.
"We also found out that the mufflers used in this series only last five hours. We put a new muffler on, and we gained 3 to 4 miles an hour on the straights, which helped us in the end.
"We were able to pass quite a few good cars today," Klein noted. "It was the best-handling car that I've driven. We learned a few things about ride height and springs this weekend. Eric [Langbein] and Scott [Gates] did a great job, and were a big part of that.
"And Dan [Andersen] was a big help," Klein reiterated. "He took care of all our tires and fuel and made sure everybody stayed on top of things."
Saturday's race from Mosport is scheduled to be broadcast by SPEED Channel on Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. Eastern.
Round Seven of the Star Mazda Series North American Championship presented by Goodyear will be held with the American Le Mans Series event at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. on Aug. 18-20.
"I look forward to having all my sponsors there," Klein said.
"Now we're 13th in points," he noted. "We're edging our way into the top 10, towards the prize money!"
