AL HARTHY QUALIFIES THIRD IN CLASS AT SCORCHING HOT OULTON PARK
Porsche Carrera Cup GB competitor Ahmad Al Harthy got the fourth race meeting of the 2010 season off to a great start at Oulton Park Island Circuit in Cheshire this afternoon, Saturday, 5th June, by posting the third fastest time in the Pro-Am 1 Class during round seven and eight qualifying.
The Omani 28-year-old, who drives for the Redline Racing team, produced a best time of 1m24.516 seconds in very hot conditions during the 30-minute session to miss out on the Pro-Am 1 pole position for the first of the weekend's races by just four 10ths of a second.
Such was Ahmad's consistency his second fastest lap was an almost identical time of 1m24.532 seconds, placing him third on the grid in class for round eight. This time, he was less than two 10ths of a second shy of Pro-Am 1 pole position.
"Today it was very important to try and get that perfect lap", said the Oman Air, National Bank of Oman and Oman Ministry of Sports Affairsbacked driver, "I got a good run on my first set of tyres which was crucial in order to get some good, solid times on the board. The second set was better for sure but I couldn't quite get the perfect lap.
"I took a risk waiting it out for the last few minutes in the pits but luckily none of the other guys were able to go any quicker so that means our tyres should be in good condition for the races. I'm really pleased, to be in the top three in Pro-Am 1 is always a challenge so it's great to have achieved that again this weekend. If the conditions stay the same tomorrow, we should be strong."
Heading into tomorrow's pair of races, Muscat-based Ahmad is fourth in the Pro-Am 1 championship standings -- within just 27 points of the class lead. Importantly, he will begin each of the Oulton Park encounters ahead of Pro-Am 1 pace-setter Ollie Jackson.
Round seven of the 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship will take place at 12.55 tomorrow, Sunday, 6th June, with round eight following at approximately 17.45. Both 18-lap encounters are expected to be screened live in the UK on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channel ITV4.
