Avila's unique win in Indonesia
Macau's Rodolfo Avila secured his second victory in the 2009 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia when the young Macanese driver won Round 7 at the Sentul International Circuit this Saturday. It was the first time that a Macanese driver, a Macanese engineer and a Macanese team win an international race.
Avila made his one crucial move at the start of the 15-lap race, when the 22 years old, who started on the first row with Menzel, overtook the experienced German to grab the lead. Avila did not relinquish the position and by the end of the race had built a comfortable lead.
"I'm very happy with the result. I had a bit of an advantage because Tim [Sugden] and Chrstian [Menzel] didn't have great starts. I took it from there and I managed to win the race", explained the driver sponsored by BNU, Macau, RPmacau, Fat Siu Lau, Sujika Crafts, PAL Asiaconsult and Thai's Asia Creative Group, who also won the first race of Zhuhai meeting in July. Race 2 saw Asia Racing Team's driver having an excellent start. Avila would keep the 1st position until the half of the race when Christin Menzel took the lead. "The car wasn't that good on new tyres and Christian was very quick today. It was impossible to keep him behind but it's better to finish 2nd than not to finish. This weekend win will help me a lot for the championship. I'm really happy to have won and maybe this will push me further for the next couple of rounds in Singapore. I hope I continue this momentum."
For the first time engineering the car of Avila was the Macanese Duarte Alves. "Overall Rodolfo did a pretty good job this weekend. He kept a head cool during the two races and it was vital to achieve these two good results", said Alves.
After the Indonesia round Avila is currently 4th in championship point standings just three points behind the last year Porsche Carrera Cup Asia champion.
Porsche Carrera Cup Asia rounds 9 and 10 will take place in Marina Bay, Singapore on 26 and 27 September 2009 as part of Singapore Formula One Grand Prix weekend.
