Young guns Marshall and Leahey complete podium in action-packed round

Jim Richards was in perfect form in round five of the Carrera Cup at Queensland Raceway today, the 55-year-old veteran taking two wins today to add to his race win yesterday that sealed the round for the OAMPS/Greenfield Mowers driver.

Richards had to fight off the advances of Queenslander Marcus Marshall in both of today's 14-lap races at the 3.12-kilometre circuit, but had enough in hand to extend his championship lead over Marshall with four rounds to run.

"I'm definitely not bored with winning," said Richards.

"The young fellows are making it hard for us young older blokes; they've won before and I'm sure they're going to win some more during the year."

Marshall, who overcame multiple clutch changes in his #31 VIP Pet Foods Porsche over the course of the weekend, was a solid second, and consolidated second in the championship.

"We're learning all the time with the car and getting faster and faster," he said.

Tim Leahey finished third in both of today's races, the Greg Murphy Racing driver happier with his car after making some incorrect set-up changes yesterday.

"The car was better in race three but as soon as the tyres got hot, we lost too much pace to keep with the front guys."

New Zealander Kevin Bell and ENJO driver Peter Fitzgerald were equal fourth for the round after they finished fourth and fifth in both of today's races, while the comeback drive of the day was by Matt Coleman.

The Victorian, who finished sixth in yesterday's opening race, was forced to start today's opening race of the back of the grid after a technical infringement.

He wasn't the only one, with Greg Keene (technical) and Charlie O'Brien (driving infringement after contact with Tony Quinn) also forced to start from the back. Coleman drove like a star in race two, passing more than 10 cars on the opening lap to eventually finish seventh and sixth in today's two races to take sixth in the round.

Both of today's events were punctuated by Safety Car periods that changed the races.

Race two saw a multiple car accident at turn three on lap one that eliminated Rodney Jane and Jonathon Webb after the former had problems under brakes and speared into the Tekno Autosports #22 car.

"There must have been fluid there because when I braked, the ABS went crazy and I got off the brakes again and then back on but I couldn't pull up and poor Jonathon was turning the corner and got hit in the side."

With assistance from the NRMA Smash Repair Team, Jane, along with Webb, were able to start the final race, Jane moving through to take 11th spot from Tony Quinn on the last lap.

The Safety Car returned on lap two of the final race due to Queenslander David Scaysbrook spinning off at turn two and becoming stuck in a gravel trap.

In the time following the deployment of the Safety Car, Jack Crocker was lucky to escape serious damage as the Megajet driver speared off the road at high speed and narrowly avoided hitting Coleman and Pedersen as he fired across the bitumen still in a spin.

Peter Hill had a consistent weekend in taking seventh for the round in the #66 Mossimo/Greg Murphy Racing machine, with Paul Pedersen, Charlie O'Brien and the consistent Dean Grant rounding out the top 10 for the round.

Dean Cook had his first retirement of the season after being crashed out by Geoff Morgan at turn three, which prompted the final Safety Car period of race three that left a one-lap dash to the chequered flag.

The Carrera Cup championship resumes at Sandown in mid-September.
