Supabarn Motorsports drivers James and Theo Koundouris have fought hard for top ten positions this weekend in the 6th round of Carrera Cup Australia run at Queensland Raceway.
James Koundouris had a strong and consistent session, but was hampered by car set up issues that meant he was not entirely happy with the way the car was responding. James qualified just outside the top ten, in 11th position.
Theo Koundouris was running close to his brother James for much of the session, but ran wide and off the track in the final corner. Theo clip the tyre barrier, damaging the rear wing and ending his session prematurely. He was still able to qualify in 14th position.
Both James and Theo made clean starts, with James jumping up to 10th place on the opening lap and Theo holding 14th place. James defended his position well, holding off Paul Stokell for much of the race. A hard charging Rodney Jane passed Stokell on lap nine, before passing James to take 10th place on the following lap. James was able to withstand the pressure Stokell was applying until the second last lap when Stokell slipped through to taking the place. James finished close behind him in 11th place.
Theo was running well and was just two places behind his brother when he spun on the final lap -- dropping him from 13th place to the rear of the pack.
Theo started race 2 in second last position after his spin in race one and was focused on charging his way through the field. He drove brilliantly during the race to move through the field, passing many cars to finish the race in 13th position, right behind his brother James.
James had a quieter race than Theo had, with fewer passing opportunities, but fought just as hard for his position. James was locked in battle with Jono Lester for much of the race, fighting hard, but unable to get past. James finished the race in 12th position.
Race 3 started well for both James and Theo with both holding their starting positions on the first lap.
The safety car came out on lap 8 due to a small grass fire on the infield that was started after a car spun off the track and dropped hot liquid onto the dry grass.
At this point in the race James and Theo were both running in the top ten with James in 9th and Theo in 10th. The pair dropped a position on lap 10 to championship front runner Aaron Carratti who was recovering from an earlier accident.
In the closing stages of the final lap, the team looked set to score another double top ten finish, but it was not to be. Carratti and Lester clashed in turn three and James became an innocent victim when his car was hit hard in the left rear causing massive damage to his car and ending his race immediately.
Theo, who was still running right behind his brother, was able to avoid the accident and brought his car home safely in 10th position.
