WEATHER ADDS FLAVOUR TO RICHARDS, COULTHARD BATTLE

Jim Richards and Fabian Coulthard continued their bumper-to-bumper racing in 2005 with both drivers taking race victories today in round six of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup at Sandown Raceway.

As Melbourne turned on a typically unpredictable weather day, Richards (OAMPS Insurance Brokers) took the honours in a dry race one while rival Coulthard (Glenfords Tool Centres / Makita) was the man in a wet race two. Richards, the inaugural Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup champion in 2003, led from pole position in race one en route to a comfortable win.

Although the 58-year-old only scored by less than a second, he wasn't seriously challenged over the 14-lap journey. Coulthard closed in over the final couple of laps after engaging in a great tussle with Sydneysider Jonathon Webb (Tekno Autosports/Yachting Unlimited) and David Reynolds (Bob Jane T-Marts) for second, third and fourth.

Webb held second until lap three when Coulthard and Reynolds both snuck through a gap. The 21-year-old did pull back a position when he overtook the younger Reynolds on lap nine. Peter Fitzgerald (Acer/Abcor) managed a solid fifth placing ahead of Cameron McLean (Sherrin Racing).

Before race two this afternoon, the heavens opened leaving the track soaked and teams scurrying for their 'wet' Michelin tyres. By the time of race, the rain had eased but the track was well watered ensuring an interesting dice to lie ahead.

All 20 drivers did extremely well to manage the conditions in the shortened race, with all cars crossing the finish line after the 10 laps.

Last year's Wright Patton Shakespeare Michelin Driver to Europe and Rookie of the Year winner, Coulthard, blitzed the field off the line to lead to the first corner from Richards, Webb, McLean and a fast-starting Luke Youlden (Team VIP Petfoods).

Coulthard was pressured over most of the journey by Richards but showed composure beyond his years to take the checkered flag and even the day's ledger.

Webb scored his second consecutive third place with a comfortable gap back to McLean in fourth and a hard charging Ian Dyk (Glenfords Tool Centres/DeWalt/AEG Electric Tools) in fifth.

Race three of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup will be held tomorrow, Sunday September 11, to conclude round six of the 2005 championship.
