DANIEL GAUNT'S CARRERA CUP JAUNT

Carrera Cup Australia will welcome another Kiwi into the fold at its next round at Wakefield Park, with Daniel Gaunt joining the Championship.

Gaunt, 23, will step into the Sherrin Equipment Porsche driven by Iain Sherrin at the first two rounds of year, in what will be his Australian Porsche debut.

While he'll be new to the Australian Championship, Gaunt knows the Porsche well after a stunning debut season in the NZ Battery Town Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge.

Gaunt stepped into the Porsche after winning the Toyota Racing Series two years in a row and he blitzed the competition in his sports-car debut.

The 23 year-old Aucklander finished his rookie Porsche season in second place overall, racking up one race win, one pole position and two fastest laps along the way.

And Gaunt can't wait to bring that good form to Australia.

"It's always been a goal of mine to race Carrera Cup so hopefully I can perform during the round," he said.

"I'm looking at this as the potential start of a permanent drive in Australia so I can't wait to get there and show people what I can do.

"Obviously I'd love to win and that's the ultimate goal but I realise it's going to take more than just showing up for that to happen.

"I realise that Iain has stepped down for this round to give me an opportunity and I hope to repay that faith to him, the team and their sponsors."

Clearly Gaunt's a driver going places and Brisbane's Iain Sherrin, who will race in the MINI Challenge during the weekend, said he was only too happy to help him get there.

"Daniel is a phenomenally talented driver who hasn't been given the chace in Australia and I'm more than happy to provide that for him," he said.

Given Gaunt's potential it is a partnership which Sherrin views as mutually beneficial.

"Not only does it benefit Sherrin MotorSport in having another fast driver in the squad, but it gives greater exposure to our sponsors and commercial partners," he said.

"Not that David Russell needs extra motivation, but having Daniel there pushing him from within the team can only help his performance and the extra experience he brings will help Grant Sherrin in the Sherrin Rentals Porsche improve as well."

Round Three of Carrera Cup Australia will take place at Wakefield Park, near Goulburn, NSW from April 4-6.
