DAVISON PULLS OUT A BATHURST RIPPER WITH SECONDS TO SPARE
Alex Davison put in a scorching lap around Mount Panorama to land pole position in his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car at round six of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup which began in Bathurst today.
Davison (Glenfords Tool Centres/DeWalt) notched his fifth pole of the season out of the six championship rounds with a blistering Porsche lap record of 2:10.9326 around the 6.231km circuit.
The 26-year-old former series champion left it until the last minute to claim pole position by finishing his best lap with only seconds remaining in the qualifying session.
It broke the previous qualifying lap record of 2:12.9287 set by Fabian Coulthard last year in the old 996-type Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.
Earlier young flier David Reynolds (Bob Jane T-Marts) set the pace and looked like he was going to continue his front-of-the-pack form, following on from his last start win at Sandown.
Reynolds posted a lap time just outside 2:12 and only 0.0002 seconds ahead of Davison, before the amazing pole-setting lap was recorded.
Almost lost in Davison's performance was Reynolds last-gasp lap of 2:11.1769 which put the two front row starters for tomorrow more than one second ahead of the next fastest qualifier.
That honour went to championship leader Craig Baird (Team VIP Petfoods) who clocked a best time of 2:12.3256.
Michelin Rookie leader David Russell (Sherrin Hire / Boom Logistics) continued to impress in his first season of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup and will start from the second row of the grid for tomorrow's race one.
Russell posted a 2:13.0086 and headed a troupe of five drivers all in the 2:13 to 2:14 range.
The others included David Wall (Glenfords Tool Centres / Hitachi) -- 2:13.0242, his team mate Jonathon Webb (Glenfords Tool Centres / Makita) -- 2:13.1511, Jim Richards (OAMPS Insurance Brokers) -- 2:13.6979, and Klark Quinn (Team VIP Petfoods) -- 2:13.8492.
Today was the Carrera Cup debut for Sherrin Motorsport driver Max Twigg and also marked the return to Porsche racing after a two season hiatus of Matt Coleman who has stepped into John Kaias' car for this one round.
Round six of the Wright Patton Shakespeare Carrera Cup at the Super Cheap Auto 1000, Bathurst will continue tomorrow with Race 1 over 8 laps at 4.00pm.
