CARRERA CUP TO FEATURE AT BIG FIVE IN 2007
The only motorsport category that will feature at the five largest Australian motorsport events in 2007 will be Carrera Cup Australia.
Cup Car Australia CEO Jamey Blaikie today confirmed the 2007 Carrera Cup Australia calendar will feature another bumper season of eight championship rounds and one non-championship round.
The all-Porsche racing series will be the only Australian motorsport category on the program of the 'big five' -- the Clipsal 500, FORMULA 1 Australian Grand Prix, Sandown 500, Super Cheap Auto 1000, and the Lexmark Indy 300.
Carrera Cup, regarded as the fastest and most successful one make motor racing championship in the world, will enter its fifth season in Australia in 2007.
Blaikie said Carrera Cup Australia would continue to be the primary support category for V8 Supercars Australia.
"We are delighted to confirm the calendar for Carrera Cup Australia next season includes eight championship rounds and support status at the FORMULA 1 Australian Grand Prix which will once again be a non-championship round," said Blaikie.
"The all-Porsche category has continued to grow across all areas this season and the calendar for next season has put it in good stead to maximise its status as a professional and successful international motor racing category.
"Being on the program of the major V8 Supercar rounds in Australia plus the Grand Prix provides Carrera Cup with maximum exposure for its sponsors, teams and drivers.
"When the calendar is designed, the considerations include the future growth of the series, exposure for key stakeholders, team budgets, circuits and facilities, and reaching a national audience.
"There are also some more exciting announcements ahead of Carrera Cup this year including the finalisation of the television package for 2007."
The 2007 Carrera Cup Australia will commence at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide from March 1 to 4, to be followed by the non-championship round at the FORMULA 1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park from March 15 to 18.
Carrera Cup has been a support category at the FORMULA 1 Australian Grand Prix since 2003 with an agreement through to and including 2010.
Round Two will return to Winton in Victoria from May 18 to 20, while Round Three will continue at Hidden Valley Raceway in the Northern Territory from June 22 to 24.
Queensland will host the first of its two rounds with the first at Queensland Raceway for Round Four from July 20 to 22, with Sydney hosting its single round at Oran Park for Round Five from August 17 to 19.
The final three rounds will be held over an intense five week period starting with Round Six at the Sandown 500 from September 14 to 16; Round Seven at the Super Cheap Auto 1000 at Bathurst from October 4 to 7; and the final Round Eight at the Lexmark Indy 300 on the Gold Coast from October 18 to 21.
In 2007, Carrera Cup Australia will continue to run the 997-type Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars that have been so successfully introduced to international motorsport over the past 18 months.
