Montanari 11th, Pavicevic retired
Durango Benetton Junior Team's dream of obtaining the first victory of the 2000 season was shattered on the 26th lap when Nienkotter took out pole-man Pavicevic. It was an eventful race with cars stalling on the grid, others not finishing and the entrance of the safety car due to minor accidents.
Giovanni Montanari: "I had a good start and I managed to keep Gardel behind me and kept my position without taking too many risks for myself and the team. On the straight I was trying very hard to keep in the draft of the cars in front, I tried passing at the Tornantino hairpin but I had the door closed on me. My main goal was to finish the race."
Andrej Pavicevic: "I had a good start but unfortunately I got too much wheelspin because pole position was on the wrong side of the track, the right side which was the dirty side. I slipped back to 4th position which I comfortably held till 7 laps from the end, at which point Nienkotter and I collided. My car felt good and I was lapping consistently quick. I am very disappointed to leave Vallelunga without points, the team worked wonderfully all weekend. Now I am looking forward to the next race in Mugello"
Marco Codello (sporting director): "After the pole position on Saturday we were confident of gaining a good result, but unfortunately our hopes were dashed when Andrej crashed, lost 4th position and was unable to rejoin the race. Montanari started 20th and finished 11th due to his good performance and cars dropping out. The team worked excellently and this was proven with the quick lap times during the race".
