Tom Coronel returns to Formula 1 on Circuit Park Zandvoort.
Tom Coronel will contest the Euro BOSS series at Zandvoort during the weekend of the Marlboro Masters. The Dutchman will drive a Benetton Formula 1 car. With this one off entry Coronel continues his long run of races during this successful weekend on the Dutch track. The Benetton Tom will drive belongs to the NDS Ascari team from Great Britain and is powered by a 720 BHp Judd V10 engine.
"It is a kind of tradition that I always have a race somewhere on this planet during the Marlboro Masters weekend. Following the same tradition I used to win most of them. In the past I contested the Masters themselves or raced in Japan. This year I can start at my hometrack at Zandvoort again", Coronel said enthusiastically. "Of course this is a great story for me. In 1999 I did some laps in the Arrows Formula 1 car and I still have great memories of that test. With cars like these something is really happening when you just only look at the throttle pedal. Of course it is a car from 1997 (the year that Tom Coronel won the Marlboro Masters of Formula 3 - red), but believe me, this machine is really going forward. Also I am quite sure that in these series one can expect some serious battles, but of course you respect your competitor's material a bit more than let's say in the ETCC. The racing I have seen so far quite pleased me. Unlike the original regulations the ex-Formula 1 cars use four litre engines to replace the three litre units that powered them in Grand Prix racing. This move was made to improve reliability. Furthermore everybody uses the Avon slick tyres which equals things out a bit more. Whether this is a new step to Formula 1 for me? I think I should be realistic and accept this wonderful challenge as it is. Plans to step into the Formula 1 World Championship have been moved aside some time ago already. At the moment I am very busy with my ETCC races for Carly Motors Team Isert. Next weekend we will have a round at Spa Francorchamps. Last week we tested with the BMW 320i at Zandvoort and it appeared that we found some more power. At the previous round at Oschersleben we were on top in qualifying, but due to another competitor I was pushed off the track. With a bit more luck we should be in for a podium place in Belgium", Tom Coronel said.
Unfortunately Tom Coronel cannot use the possibility to test the Benetton at Brands Hatch. At the same day he has to qualify for the ETCC race at Spa Francorchamps. "So all that remains is two 30 minutes sessions at Zandvoort. Fortunately I know the track well and let's hope that this should be enough to be a bit more further up the grid", Coronel concludes. For sure Coronel will be out to make a nice show.
