press release from Skip Barber Racing Tony Renna,of Deland Florida, bested eleven other finalists to win the 1995 Skip Barber Racing Big Scholarship Run-Off at Sebring Raceway. By showing the best combination of speed, consistency, racing savvy, and public relations skills, the 19 year old Renna earned a six-race, half-season, entry in the 1996 Barber/Dodge Pro Series sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America Pro Racing organization. The award is valued at aprox. $60,000. Every year the Skip Barber organization pits eight to twelve of the best racers from its regional 2-liter Formula Dodge race series against each other in a three-day shootout at Sebring. Renna earned his way into this year's Big Scholarship by winning the Skip Barber Formula Dodge Race Series Southern Championship. Renna won eight races out of 14 starts, and finished second three times. "Yes I was confident coming in that I could win Skip's scholarship" said Renna, "but most of the other guys felt the same way I'm sure. I can't wait to start the Barber/Dodge testing". Skip Barber Racing instructors Peter Argetsinger, Robbie Buhl, Kelly Collins, and Dorsey Schroeder were part of the judging team, alongwith journalists Gordon Kirby and Jeremy Shaw. The program began with a day a Human Performance International in Daytona Beach, a facility which specializes in motorsports driver skills and readiness-analyzation. "It was very, very, close this year" said Skip Barber, former SCCA National Champion and Formula One/F5000 racer before founding the mutli-faceted racing school which bears his name, "You don't get here out of a group of 300-400 drivers if you're not quite good. Of the 12 this year, Tony showed he had the best package. Quick, smart, and ready to jump on this opportunity" 1995 is the fifth year for the Big Scholarship Run-Off. Previous winners include Jacki Scheckter, 1995 Barber/Dodge Pro Series champion, and NASCAR Busch Grand National driver Jerry Nadeau. - end- Thanks to Rick Roso for providing this information -- all typos are mine, with apologies.
