The 2001 Formula Dodge National Championship Presented by RACER season officially began in earnest when 26 racers took to Sebring International Raceway for the inaugural qualifying session of the 13 round series. Qualifying on the classic 17-turn, 3.61-mile "12-Hours of Sebring" configuration, Juan Manuel Polar established provisional pole, then lowered and equaled his best time of 2:24.857 sec. to fend off all challengers and take the pole position by over 0.600 sec. In addition to National Championship duty, Polar will also contest an assortment of Barber Dodge Pro Series races this year.
Joining Polar on the front row is Tophie Stewart, also back for a second season who was only a half-second off the pace. In row 2, Julio Campos will line up along side Barber-CART Karting Scholarship winner A. J. Allmendinger. Campos advanced late in the session and finished strong to nab a favorable spot on tomorrow's grid. Allmendinger overcame practice adversity earlier in the week to turn in an exceptional qualifying result.. Returning racers Dan Di Leo and Landon Yee will start from fifth and sixth, Grant Maiman and Leonard Maia from seventh and eighth, and Scott Presti and Craig Duerson will start from ninth and tenth. Duerson sees race action for the first time since winning the Formula Dodge Southern Series Championship.
Most of the racers, including the four Barber-CART Karting Scholarship winners, have already been behind the wheel of the Formula Dodge R/T 2000. Look for lap times to drop in Saturday's Round 1 action as drivers increase their comfort levels with the car. Round 1 racing is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Prior to tomorrow's race, there will be another qualifying session for Round 2 action, to take place on Sunday. <pre> 2001 Formula Dodge National Championship Qualifying Results Round 1 Sebring International Raceway
