Road America Finish Pushes Up Bell In Points
Elkhart Lake, WI (July 11, 1999)-- Townsend Bell's first trip to Road America for Round 7 of the Barber Dodge series left him with a fondness for the track and a finish that pushed him up a rung in the points race. After qualifying 8th, Bell drove his #25 DirecPC, PC World Magazine Reynard Dodge to 5th place.
Always a quick learner, Bell, a Costa Mesa, CA native, was the 2nd fastest driver in the 1st practice session on Saturday. On race day, Bell gained two positions on the start, from which he was looking forward to challenging the front runners. However, following difficulty on the restart after a yellow flag, Bell found himself in 9th place. With his usual adeptness, Bell worked his way through competition to finish 5th. The final laps saw Bell dicing with John Fogarty (who finished 4th), but as he explained, "When you're not leading, there are never enough laps."
Bell's 5th place finish moved him into 3rd place in the series standings with 66 points, ahead of previous series points leader Ricky Moran with 61. Reigning Barber Dodge series champ Jeff Simmons and Brazilian Nilton Rossoni round out the top two spots. Round 8 will take the Barber Dodge Series to the Raceway on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan August 6th-8th.
On the 19th of this month, Townsend Bell, accompanied by his #25 Reynard Dodge, will attend the 1999 Satellite Broadcasters Association trade show. Bell will sign autographs in the DirecPC booth where his car will be on display. Rumor has is it the adjoining booth will be stocked with Playmates; whether Bell is ready to endure such fierce competition for autographs is questionable, but judging from his poise on the track, he will no doubt accept the challenge with his pants on.
