ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Aug. 15)- Nilton Rossoni of Curitiba, Brazil wrapped up his second Barber Dodge Pro Series pole position of the season with a new Barber Dodge track record at Road America Saturday morning. The 17-year old Rossoni, in his first year in the series, broke the magical 2:14 mark with a sweltering 2:13.925 at 108.813 mph to shatter the old mark of PPG-Dayton Indy Lights star Tony Renna of 2:15.748 set in 1996.
"The track was very good and the tires took about five laps to warm up. The first half of the session, the track wasn't really warmed up,'' Rossoni said. "I made some changes in the car and they really worked out, and I was able to do about three quick laps and have the pole."
Giovanni Anapoli of Montecchio, Italy will join Rossoni on the front row with the second-best time, a 2:14.329 at 108.559 mph. Anapoli was the fastest driver in Friday's first round of qualifying, but had to lop almost half a second off his previous time (2:14.837) to stay out front.
"I'm a little bit disappointed, especially because I think my quickest lap was not my best lap. But anyway, I'm second _ you can't win a race from tenth," Anapoli said. "The main thing is I feel the car good, so I'm comfortable for the race."
Jeff Simmons of Granby, Conn. earned the third slot with a 2:14.366 at 108.351mph, with Barber Dodger Rio Big Scholarship winner Shane Donley of Las Vegas, Nev. (2:14.466, 108.375 mph) and Eric Tresslar of Denver, Col. (2:14.759, 108.140 mph) completing the top five.
Local driver Gregg Borland of Elkhart Lake, who teaches at the Skip Barber Racing School at Road America, will start 17th with a time of 2:15.840 at 107.279 mph.
"The car was coming around and looking pretty solid towards the end of the season. I had a spin coming underneath the Billy Mitchell bridge, because I was trying to do it flat out a little early. I spun and tagged the wall," Borland said. "The good news is I've raced here a lot. I think that once everybody gets through the first lap or so, traveling long straights and gets a pretty good feeling for things, I think I can make some pretty good moves up tomorrow."
Starting order for Sunday's Barber Dodge Pro Series race at the Texaco Havoline 200 in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Qualifying position, driver, hometown or country, lap time and average miles per hour around the 4.048-mile, 14-turn road course. All cars are identical Reynard Dodge V-6, open-wheel, single-seat race cars on Michelin racing tires.
