Boss Wins; Championship Goes Down To Final Race

RENO, Nev. (Sept. 22) - In a thrilling street fight, the resurgent Geoff Boss took the win in the 35-lap Barber Dodge Pro Series race at the inaugural Reno Grand Prix, staving off polesitter Rino Mastronardi then Thomas Schie for his second win of the year. Fredrik Larsson, who entered the race with the chance to clinch the Barber Dodge championship--worth $150,000--if he could win here, was third. Mastronardi spun while in second place with three laps to go, but brilliantly kept it off the wall and recovered to fifth, just behind Derek Hill.

Valvoline/Team USA driver Tony Renna was punted by Andres Gomez while running seventh, breaking Renna's right-rear suspension.

The championship now goes down to the final race, Lime Rock Park on October 12. Larsson needs to score four points (12th place, or 13th with the pole) to clinch the title, regardless what Schie does. -Rick Roso
