In First Automobile Race

Ricky Taylor, 15-year-old son of sports car endurance ace Wayne Taylor, recently competed in his first automobile race, the Skip Barber Southern Regional Championship race, at Daytona International Speedway. Having previously completed the Skip Barber Racing School, Taylor was a rookie to the Southern Regional races. Although a rookie to car racing in general, Taylor has been a go-kart racing championship for several years, having started competing when he was 12 years old.

The young Taylor showed his talents immediately on the first day of racing by finishing sixth out of 16 competitors, many of them much more experienced drivers. For his stellar efforts, he won the Skip Barber "Rookie of the Race" award.

"It was really great to receive the rookie award in my first race," said Taylor, who was born in London, England but calls Altamonte Springs, Florida his home.

Unfortunately, the second race featured an accident that collected a few cars, including Ricky, who was competing in the Sportsman category. "Ricky did very well the first day, especially considering he's a newbie," said Divina Galica, Senior Vice President of Racing, Skip Barber Racing School. "There was quite a bit of chaos in the second race. It was a pity he got caught up in a general stack up that often happens. He went for the gap and it closed when he got there. It's a shame for him. I was delighted with the result of his first race, finishing sixth, especially since he is only 15. Ricky is a very competent driver. If he hadn't been involved in the accident, I think he would have ended up on the podium."

"He is very able in the car. I am sure we can help him step up even more when he has gotten more seat time," added Galica, who is instrumental in the development of drivers who go through the Skip Barber Schools.

The Skip Barber races ran on the 3.56-mile circuit of Daytona on which Ricky' s father, Wayne, just won his second Rolex 24 at Daytona endurance sports car race in February 2005.
