SKIP BARBER RACING, MICHELIN, ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP
MONTEREY, Calif. (Oct. 24) - Michelin North America, the world's largest tire company and creator of the first radial tire, announced today a new partnership with the Barber Dodge Pro Series, and the Skip Barber Racing and Driving Schools. As part of their partnership, Michelin will be the official tire supplier of the Barber Dodge Pro Series, the Skip Barber Racing School, the Dodge/Skip Barber Driving School and the Skip Barber Formula Dodge Race Series. In addition, Michelin will have a significant presence at Skip Barber-owned Lime Rock Park, with the soon-to-be-constructed start/finish building that will be called the "Michelin Building."
After the initial phase of ther partnership, Michelin will make annual contributions to the Barber Dodge Scholarship Ladder (announcement is on Sunday). This fund will assist promising Skip Barber graduates in developing their professional racing careers. "We are extremely pleased with this new joint venture," said Michelin Director of Motorsports Herb Johnson. "There are few names as well recognized throughout the racing industry as Skip Barber. He is committed to training drivers at all levels and from all backgrounds. We look forward to sharing in his commitment." An established racer in his own right, Skip Barber is one of the few Americans to compete in Formula 1. He started racing in 1959 and by the time he climbed out of the cockpit in 1974 he had won numerous races and championships in his 15-year career. In 1975, with two borrowed Lola Formula Fords and four students, Barber started the Skip Barber School of High Performance Driving, now called the Skip Barber Racing School. With respect to the Barber Dodge Pro Series, it is now recognized as the direct path to higher levels of open-wheel competition, in particular the CART Indy Lights championship, itself the Official Development Series of the PPG-CART World Series. "The Michelin and Skip Barber philosophies are similar," continued Johnson, "to provide the best quality product available for high performance. Our partnership is grounded in common values." Michelin, which brought the radial tire to the world more than 50 years ago, is the world's largest tire company. It has 19 plants in North America and produces tires to fit every type of vehicle, from bicycles to the space shuttle. -end contact: Rick Roso, 860-435-1300
