"Steve Welk has a solid opening weekend in the Formula Dodge National Championship"

Franklin, WI. - The Formula Dodge National Championship Presented by RACER magazine kicked off last weekend at the Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. 24 of the top amateur drivers in the nation showed up for the 2-race event.

Saturday's qualifying session was held under sunny conditions and Steve drove the car into the 12th spot for the first race of the season. During an eventful 17-lap event Steve was able to bring the car home in the 13th position. Scoring points in his first national championship event.

Sunday brought less than stellar conditions, as rain would throw everyone off in the morning sessions. During an incredibly wet qualifying session Steve would place himself 13th on the grid. Drying track conditions would make everyone guess on car setup for the race. Steve missed on his setup a little and faded to a fighting 18th place finish.

"I thought that this weekend was a solid starting place for this season. Obviously I would I have liked to finish a little higher but I can't complain about scoring points in my first National Championship event. The drying track on Sunday caught everyone off guard and I missed on my setup for the dry track. That was a huge learning experience and I'm looking forward to Fontana to improve on this weekends results."

The Formula Dodge National Championship presented by RACER moves to The California Speedway April 11-13.
