MONTEREY, Calif. (October 25, 1998) - Team KOOL Green's Alex Gurney started third but finished 15th after tangling with Thomas Schie on lap 12 of 25 in today's Barber Dodge Pro Series season-finale at Laguna Seca Raceway.

Gurney was running eighth on lap 12 when he and Schie made contact and both spun off the circuit. Gurney rejoined the race in 21st position and improved six positions over the final 13 laps.

Todd Snyder, of Sheffield, Mass., beat Jeff Simmons by 4.634 seconds in the race, but lost the season-long drivers championship to Simmons, of East Granby, Conn., by just two points, 158-156. Nilton Rossoni, of Brazil, finished third in today's race.

Gurney, of Newport Beach, Calif., unofficially finishes 10th in the 1998 Barber Dodge Pro Series points in his rookie season. The Team Green Academy Class of '97/'98 grad scored 55 points in 7 of 12 races, with a best finish of fourth place last weekend at Homestead. Homestead also marked his first pole position and the first time he led a race this season.

ALEX GURNEY, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD-DODGE, Started 3rd / Finished 15th; Unofficially finishes 10th in season point standings with 55 points:

"I flat-spotted a tire in this morning's warm-up, but we thought it wouldn't be a problem so I kept it on for the race. Now, I wish I had changed it. It cost me a number of positions in the early going."

"Thomas Schie made a late move inside of me and I could see he couldn't get past so I moved over to give him room, but he kept moving over on me and made contact. Actually, the KOOL car seemed almost better after that but it certainly ended my chances at a good finish."

"It was a disappointing end to my first professional season. I had hoped to get on the podium before the end of the year. But I'm glad I was able to produce some good qualifying efforts for Team KOOL Green at the end - qualifying on the pole at Homestead last week and third here. I just wish I could have done better in the race."
